After upgrading to 12.10, I have a launcher bar at the bottom of the screen but apps do not show up in tabs there, thus I cannot minimize and relaunch.

Denis refers to Gnome Classic (and Gnome Classic (no effects))
with that bar on the bottom. The workspace boxes at the right
of that bar show up for me and work properly, showing
the active apps. But the minimized apps
never show along the bottom.

I tried all 3 nvidia proprietary drivers available through the software-updater
/system-settings. Highest numbered 304.51. None made the
slightest difference.

Minimized apps disappear from the launcher bar at the bottom
but are still live. Which is quite annoying. So it's impossible
to usefully minimize things. All has to stay open on desktop to be usable.

xfce4 seems to work properly and its launcher bar (at the top of the screen)
shows minimized terminal sessions just fine.

In case it was not obvious above: running apps in 12.10 never appear in the launcher bar.
Running or minimized. (Not referring to the workspace boxes at the lower right
of the bar, but to the entire white bar at the bottom, left of the workspace boxes).
Not present when an app started, and do not
appear at any time, so when one minimizes (say a terminal session) the terminal
session is not visible on the desktop anywhere with Gnome Classic.

Using xfce4 till gnome classic works for me(I really need to minimize things at times)... Let me know if there is anything

I would have stayed with xfce4 but the last message I got from actionparsnip was:

ok run:
sudo apt-get instal nvidia-current
Then reboot, try both sessions after the reboot

and after I did that none of the Gnome flavors changed (still no app tabs) and xfce4 didn't work anymore. So I gave up at that point and reloaded 12.10 but then I came up with a problem I had a couple of years ago with no wireless recognition. Because I am going away next week I had to give up on Ubuntu for now (after about 6-7 years) and use windoze to get my work done. Sad

On startup first login after a gnome/xfce switch (before the real panels
came up)
things looked wierd (buffer data in nvidia?) but all worked anyway.

Bit of a learning curve with xfce. And things don't look as pretty.
But pretty much everything is now working that I need.

Another machine here, x86_64. UPgraded 11.10->12.04->12.10 just now, and the launcher bar
works perfectly with gnome classic. What the critical differences are
that make one machine not have a usable launcher bar is a mystery to me.
