Sometimes it copies to clipboard but the resulting pasted screenshot is broken.

I just registered to confirm that I've hit this bug as well on a fully patched Ubuntu 17.10 system. When you save the screenshot to disk the problem does not occur.

I believe this problem is not caused by the Gnome screenshot program. When open an image in image viewer and copy the image to clipboard and paste the image to gimp from the clipboard buffer I get the same broken image with the grey area. This problem might be situated in the program that handles the clipboard in Gnome or whatever handles copying to or pasting from the clipboard.

Maybe the issue is actually related to Wayland? Do you notice a difference
between Xorg and Wayland session?

There is indeed a difference between xorg and wayland. If I login using an
xorg session it works.

I can confirm that logging into Ubuntu using Xorg solves the issue for me.

I have the exact same problem. It was working before, but some recent update must have broken something. Running Xorg, not wayland on 18.04. Screenshot goes through the motions, but nothing ends up in the clipboard buffer to paste.

I can also confirm that I am now having this same issue over the last week, as Roland above mentioned.

+1 to Roland's issue. Screenshot's are not pasting as expected. I had a clipboard indicator extension for Gnome enabled. Thinking that this might have some impact I disabled it, yet pasting images from the clipboard does not work. Going to try and debug this one further.

Same as Roland except I can paste into Gmail's Compose Email, but not into GIMP or Libreoffice.

On Ubuntu 20.04, if you use the command line option, it does not copy, but it does copy if you use the GUI.

Forgot to mention: I'm using X11.
Also, I've found that that option works fine if Include pointer option is checked.
