Bug Description

When I open a new app (e.g a terminal window) in the dock does not appear nothing for about 15 seconds, when the icon of the terminal appears. It is incredibly annoying since I work open and closing apps and don't know where they are since the dock is updated every 15 seconds

Can you reproduce this bug on a clean daily .iso of 20.04?

Your install medium says 19.10 so i assume you upgraded in early stage
from 19.10 to 20.04
so its reccomended to try reproduce this on a clean daily too, this
not specificly has to be a clean install, you could also try a liveusb
and compare

I'm seeing the same problem on my system upgraded to 20.04 from 19.10.

It only occurs running the Ubuntu session on wayland, X11 works fine and as expected.

@Antonio do you use xorg or wayland? could you add your 'journalctl -b 0' log after getting the issue?

I have this on a system upgraded from 18.04 and running Wayland. The bug does not appear on X session.

On another system with a clean install of 20.04, the bug does not appear on a Wayland session.

Confirming this issue on an 19.10 to 20.04 upgrade (originally 18.04). Problem persisted after a dconf reset. Problem also oberserved on a fresh 20.04 with old profile. Problem also observed on fresh install in virtualbox with a fresh user profile. All were minimal installs if that matters which I highly doubt. Problem seems to occur inconsistently across boots/logins.

In addition to post #10:

Reproducible by running

'gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock show-mounts false'

and restarting gnome. Toggling it back to 'true' and restarting gnome clears the issue for me.

Running X11.

I have the same problem, even worse with a delay of 25 seconds between program start and dock update.

This is a fresh install of 20.04 LTS on a clean laptop with a wiped hard disk.

schorsch@jbook:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
Release: 20.04
Codename: focal

schorsch@jbook:~$ uname -a
Linux jbook 5.4.0-29-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 29 14:32:27 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The only thing I did after the new installation was installing the dash-to-panel Gnome extension. Once, I deactivated that extension and the Ubuntu Dock showed again, I noticed the delay. However, I cannot say for sure if the delay has been there from the beginning.

I completely removed the dash-to-panel extension using apt, but the Ubuntu Dock delay is still there.

I can easily reproduce this issue when there is removable USB medium connected, e.g. a phone or usb drive that causes a "mount" icon to show up on the dock.
Once I boot with USB medium connected, the dock will take a long time to launch.
