Bug Description

Using the slider in the status menu I'm able to set the brightness of my display to zero. Then the screen is completely black and not possible to find the slider again.

I don't know if this is a driver issue or GNOME shell should have a lower limit on brightness (e.g. 10%).

Changed in gnome-shell (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: New → Triaged

Robert, is this actually a gnome-settings-daemon bug (or even as https://bugzilla.gnome.org/782155 implies, a kernel bug)?

Do you experience the same problem in Unity?

This doesn't occur in Unity - the lowest setting is dark but still visible.

I don't have this bug but I think it is a feature and I want it.

Is there a way to manually modify the lower bound for the brightness level?

AFAIK, the lower bound is machine-dependent. Same software, different hardware, different lower bound. Some machines can achieve full blackness already, and others can't. It's always been this way...

So that also suggests this is a kernel issue. If you want it changed for your particular machine type then a kernel change would probably be necessary.
