Bug Description

I a'm on 17.10, I have a custom layout for window controls, Namely "close, maximize, minimize:menu" I like it. It works well in a unity style layout witch I prefer, but Gnome tweak lays out the buttons "close, minimize, maximize:" with no way to change it except to move them right. And it screws with my app menu when this happens.
Since gnome tweak doesn't actually allow you to set a custom decoration layout it has to be done through dconf. The problem is every so often tweak decides to overwrite those keys to one of the choices it provides. If tweak refuses to allow you to chose your own layout, the least it could do is respect a custom layout.

As long as you don't touch the settings in the "Titlebar Buttons" section, it shouldn't override your custom button-layout.

logically that's what I figured, but it seems even looking at the page that setting is located causes an overwrite. Occasionally just touching tweak causes it. I wouldn't complain, it's obviously a design choice. But using dconf is just horrible now, and its really hard to find all the settings that tweak does help with.

It is difficult to provide a nice easy UI but support lots of options for the window buttons. As an example, before GNOME 3.25/3.26, the GNOME Tweaks app did not support window buttons on the left at all!

I don't plan on fixing this issue any time soon because it's unclear how to fix it and not make things worse for users who are happy with the provided settings. But I'll keep the bug open in case someone figures out how to make it work better.

I understand I'm not programmer, but I seem to recall an earlier version on tweak showing just a blank box for that setting when I set a custom value. Now it still shows left or right. So it seems it used to have a way to handle custom keys.

I've had a thought on this. Budgie is now doing the same thing even more aggressively than tweak.

What if you checked the key against the options tweak provides, if there's no match it's obviously been set by the user and should be left alone.
