Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem-gstreamer

Totem cannot play video of type x-ati-vcr (fourcc appears to be VCR2).

When it tries, it displays at the console, "** Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|totem-gstreamer|ATI VCR 2 decoder|decoder-video/x-ati-vcr, vcrversion=(int)2 (ATI VCR 2 decoder)"

It will run gstreamer-codec-install with the following commandline: "/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/gstreamer-codec-install --transient-for=62914563 gstreamer|0.10|totem-gstreamer|ATI VCR 2 decoder|decoder-video/x-ati-vcr, vcrversion=(int)2" That program does not find any codecs either.

totem-xine is also unable to play this file, but of course does not run gstreamer-codec-install.

mplayer can play this, and appears to use the mpeg decoder to play it (it displays: "Opening video decoder: [libmpeg2] MPEG 1/2 Video decoder libmpeg2-v0.4.0b
Selected video codec: [mpeg12] vfm: libmpeg2 (MPEG-1 or 2 (libmpeg2))")

indeed, but appears to be more like a gstreamer issue than a totem one, ati vcr 2 is not supported by gstreamer right now, you need to install the w32 package to get it working.

Yes, it's definitely a gstreamer problem.

I assume that by "w32" you mean "w32codecs". That package is not necessary to play the video linked above, and installing it does not allow totem(-gstreamer) to play the video.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? May you please try the same with Karmic? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

This is still occurring on Ubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail". I'm getting sound but no video. I have gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad, gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly and gstreamer1.0-libav installed.

Regarding your comment "(I love Ubuntu’s “wait for a while and hope the bug goes away” technique of bug “fixing”)", Ubuntu/Canonical are not the developers of this software. I suggest that you file a gstreamer bug report in the upstream bugtracker at bugs.freedesktop.org and then add a watch to this bug by clicking "Also affects project" at the top of the page.
