Bug Description

Current Dapper and all previous gnome-panles show 3 stray vertical lines in the notification area. Are these notification area apps that arent displaying anything (e.g. 1 px min stays on) or are they some sort of artifact of the applet itself? I don't know if there is a way to get a list of applications that would or should have a presence in the notification area but ill happuliy check it out if anyone knows how. screen capture next comment. thx. -mf

Lines are inbetween to the properly transparent "gripper" and the network monitor.

Thanks for your bug. That's a different issue than the non transparent icons probably, I've forwarded it upstream to have their opinion on it: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=334824

Similar issue for me, desribed (with screenshots) in bug #37783 which seems to be duplication of this report. An unwanted space exists between some icons and yes, with transparent panel it will be shown as three vertical lines, just check the screenshots in my report to compare.

I have done a small amount of testing an noticed that they stray lines are the remenants of programs that have previously run in the background and possibly attempted to surrender their notification area. For example when you are updated completely there are 3 stray lines and when you need an update and the "Software Updates" icon is active you only have 2 stray lines. I dont know if it is an error in the way the surrender their notification area window or what the others are though.

sometimes it shows weird icons in the notification area without there being an active application to justify there being an icon.
