Bug Description

Binary package hint: icoutils

While browsing my filesystem using nautilus I suddenly found my computer crawling to a halt.

Upon investigation I found wrestool was using all my memory (> 1.5GB) trying to process an incomplete download of a game called 'company of heroes'.

I have truncated the exe down to just 1000 bytes and the problem still exists. This 1000 byte file is attached (hopefully).

Confirmed. Downloading an .exe to the desktop results in the memory to massively shoot up and kill the system for a while. This happens about once every minute.

Related to bug 614918? And what about bug 79030?

Changed in icoutils (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed
summary: - wrestool hangs system processing incomplete exe
+ wrestool repeatedly thrashing system for RAM with incomplete/downloading
+ exes

This happens to me whenever I open a folder that contains a large .exe file. For example, I recently downloaded both the Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 demos (both 1.9GB .exe). When I open the folder either of them are in, wrestool eats up my memory....

I've attached a screenshot showing the RAM usage.

Same problem here. Downloaded large .exe successfully and viewed folder containing the file in nautilus. Suddenly wrestool uses up all memory (even minutes after I closed firefox and nautilus) and almost crashes my maschine. It's the first time I have seen this tool do something and I already hate it.

Used latest up-to-date Ubuntu and Wine from the software center.

I've made a quick patch to help with incomplete exes at least. Use with caution etc etc. Works for me.

I don't think it will help with handling complete large files because of the way wrestool likes to load the entire file into memory and then move it around. If the exe seems to ask for 4GB of memory space it will happily allocate all that and then fill it with potentially garbage.

Currently waiting to be built in ppa:

For me sometimes when I mount a NTFS partition is causing that wrestool to eat all my memory. This is see in the htop:
wrestool --extract --type= group_icon
