OTR plugin does not load in Xenial

Bug #1579548 reported by Raimund Specht

irssi-plugin-otr (Ubuntu)
Confirmed
Undecided
Unassigned

Bug Description

1.0.0-1build1

When I try to load the OTR module, Irssi says:

-!- Irssi: Error loading module otr/core: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/irssi/modules/libotr_core.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

When I copy the *.so file to the named directory, Irssi says:

-!- Irssi: otr/otr is ABI version 0 but Irssi is version 2, cannot load

So this package is completly useless.

When will this bug be assigned for a fix?

the last activity was 12 months ago, this bug makes the package useless for all users, requiring them to either:
1) use the above patch themselves (some users may not have the capability to do this)
2) not use OTR for irssi.

Is this going to be fixed? If not can the package be removed?

I guess this package needs the Ubuntu equivalent of what we call a binNMU in Debian.

note that a similar issue is fixed for the xmpp plugin in debian's
https://bugs.debian.org/772479, by a rebuild.

it will be fixed in a more prinicipled way once the irssi package
Provides: an abi-specific virtual package name. (see the discussion in
that debian bug for more details).
