It used to work until a few months ago.

There is a similar bug filed and resolved in 2007. This is why I opened a new one.

This very bug is caused by an incorrect locale.
That is, the locales has been setup in /etc/default/locale, but the system has mangled it in a weird way.

Nonetheless it's a bug!
It cannot access a file because of a locale problem and instead says the size cannot be determined.
The error message is misleading at least.
