Now on karmic I can't scan for channels.

Same here. Just upgraded. Downloaded the scan data. But still unable to scan channels. Buttons grayed out as described by last poster.

My card is a LifeView Duo (Philips Semiconductors SAA7131/SAA7133/SAA7135 Video Broadcast Decoder). It has worked perfectly since Gutsy.

have a look at dmesg. I have an A-Link DVB USB dongle, and I noticed in dmesg that there is no firmware! I installed the linux-firmware-nonfree package, which includes the A-Link firmware. Then remove adapter, re-insert, open kaffeine. Now open menu "Television" > "Configure Television" then select tab "Device 1". On "Device 1" tab select Source: Autoscan and press OK. Then go to menu "Television" > "Channels" - now "start scan" button is enabled.

Does this work for you? I think a new bug could be filed against Kaffeine, so that on Kaffeine would clearly indicate that no TV adapter is found, and perhaps even would suggest installing the missing firmware.

One reason for this behaviour may be that hal is not installed or the hal daemon is not running, since kaffeine (at least as of 1.0-2) uses HAL to find DVB devices.

To find out if that is your problem, look for messages like

QStringList Solid::Backends::Hal::HalManager::findDeviceByDeviceInterface(const Solid::DeviceInterface::Type&) error: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown"

in a terminal in which you start kaffeine. The quick fix is to install hal.

kaffeine should probably at least recommend hal for the time being.
