OS not recognizing dell laptop touchpad

Laptop: Dell Precision 5540
After installing ubuntu, my touchpad worked only for a few days and then stopped working totally.
And it hasn't worked in a long time now. I started looking a little bit more into it today and I think it might be a problem with the kernel.
