You may need to run the following:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then re-install the package.

If that does not resolve your issue, please mark the bug as "Confirmed"

Many thanks, I used the three commands OK, however, with apologies fro
my ignorance, although I have studied the Ubuntu Help Center and my
Ubuntu Reference Guide, I cannot find how to reinstall the package. I
tried dpkg-reconfigure, but the response was that the package was not
installed. Whilst dpkg -i appears to be the right command, I am unsure
and concerned that I do more harm than good!

Further to my recent email I tried:
summers@summers-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall

The solution is this:

Boot into a different kernel than 2.6.32-41*, I booted into 2.6.32-40. Now, I don't have graphics drivers installed for that kernel, so what I did next was to ssh back into my machine from my macbook adding the -X command (X forwarding). I then proceeded to completely remove all packages with the version 2.6.32-41* (including configuration files). I suppose you could do this via apt-get at the shell also. Then I re-installed the 2.6.32-41* packages that were removed. This time, dpkg finishes normally. Reboot and you're back to the latest version of the kernel (properly installed).

Sorry, I left out that I used synaptic package manager to do this... (why the -X was required).

I have found this (again) - As the kernel has been updated again

The error messages indicate that the file /initrd.img already exists. When I looked at it - there was a bad symbolic link there. Make sure you have an invalid symbolic link there.

I solved it by:

cd /
sudo rm initrd.img
sudo apt-get install -f

It should all install
