ALPS Touchpad' incorrectly detected as PS/2 mouse in 'Acer Aspire V3-771G'

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1016147

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

My friend has run into this on an Acer Aspire V3-771G as well. What needs to be done to move this forward? Would it help to run 'apport-collect 1016147' on the computer as mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1016147/comments/5 or was the information provided in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1016147/comments/12 enough? I don't actually know the format of data returned by apport-collect, so I don't know if that's what it looks like. In any case, is there anything I can do to help move this along? I'd be willing to work on a solution, though my knowledge of kernels and drivers is limited at best, but if someone could point me in the right direction I could try to take a stab at things.

Thank you for the reply Christopher. I am fairly new to the Launchpad community, so I was wondering if you could tell me why this bug is insufficient. Why is it beneficial to create a new bug the will effectively be an exact duplicate of this one, since the problem I'm experiencing is exactly described here. Similarly, if I did create a new bug, it seems to me that this bug, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1054439 created by Matt Smith as you instructed him, and my potential new bug are addressing essentially the same issue and thus should all be duplicates of each other.

WTF does expired mean. The bug is still there. I'd kinda like to use
my touchpad as a touchpad instead of needing a mouse to do any useful
work. What's required to debug this?

This bug is due to a confirmed lack of support for newer ALPS touch pads and is being tracked upstream. I have written a patch which I need to submit for merge.

Note that it's possible that this isn't the only issue represented in this report but due to the closed nature of ALPS hardware it's very difficult to know. If the patch presented in the attached bug doesn't solve your problem, you should open a new issue.

Maybe I missed it. Is there a link to your patch somewhere in the bug
report?

For all those still looking, I have an Acer Aspire v3 771g and this package: psmouse-alps-dst-0.4.tbz , works perfectly, here are installation instructions:

Extract psmouse-alps-dst-0.4 in /usr/src/ with sudo rights.
If you have installed the module before, I suggest you to completely remove it before reinstalling with:
sudo dkms remove psmouse/alps-dst-0.4 --all
(of course, if you have installed another version of the module, change version number accordingly)
Then just give those commands in the terminal:
sudo dkms build psmouse/alps-dst-0.4
sudo dkms install psmouse/alps-dst-0.4
sudo rmmod psmouse && sudo modprobe -v psmouse
After that your touchpad will be hopefully recognized by your machine.

It solved my issue on Acer Aspire v3 771.

Helmut Kappel, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc5
