Bug Description

I got a portable drive bay 2000 in hopes of using it as an external DVD/Zip/LS120 drive through USB, but it appears that Ubuntu can't recognized the drive. With a laptop it works fine through the PCMCIA card, but the USB connection does not work. Through USB it uses a ScanLogic Corp. SL11R-IDE IDE Bridge which is likely the issue, but I've heard that it works fine with CD drives and other removable storage as opposed to multi-partition hard disks.

The USB connection works through a Windows VM (Vista and 7) and my Thinkpad is even able to boot from it. I even tried recompiling the kernel as suggested at: http://askubuntu.com/questions/184076/why-doesnt-the-scanlogic-sl11r-ide-usb-to-ata-adapter-work The change does not seem to fix the issue.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Braden Obrzut, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc4

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Braden Obrzut, just to clarify, your bug report is how the portable drive bay 2000 doesn't work through USB on your physical host or VirtualBox Ubuntu guest?

Braden Obrzut (blzut3) wrote :

It doesn't work on any of my Ubuntu systems, physical or virtual. (I've tried it on a few Thinkpads as well which is how I know the PCMCIA adapter works.) This is my everyday system so I can't install the beta version of (K)ubuntu on the physical host. Come October when 13.10 is officially released I'd be happy to collect the data on the host if it matters.

The problem still exists in Kubuntu 13.10 witht he 3.12 kernel requested. Tested on the P55A-UD3. The device still works great on the same machine when passed through to a Windows 8.1 VM in Oracle VirtualBox 4.3.

Thinkpad X61 Tablet is still able to identify the device as bootable and Xubuntu 12.04.2 32-bit bootloader appears. Note that I did not wait to see if the OS will boot, just that the boot loader appears. The device is, however, just as broken on a booted Kubuntu 13.10 64-bit install on the Thinkpad as it is on the P55A-UD3. As before the PCMCIA adapter included works fine, which is expected since it has an Intel IDE controller instead of the ScanLogic.

I'm not sure, I reported this bug shortly after obtaining the device. I do see bug #1046712 indicating the problem exists in precise and bug #336189 indicates it may have been once fixed for Intrepid.

I believe Wireshark is capable of capturing the data off the USB bus? Would it, by any chance, help if I tried to get a capture of the device working on Windows and a capture of what Ubuntu is trying to do?

Braden Obrzut, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem through the appropriate channel by following the instructions _verbatim_ at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel#KernelTeam.2BAC8-KernelTeamBugPolicies.Overview_on_Reporting_Bugs_Upstream ?

Thank you for your understanding.
