Bug Description

On a Notebook HP 650 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit i received updates for kernel 3.2.0-55-generic (exactly 3.2.0-55.85) and starting the notebook with that kernel results in unavailable connection, no wifi. Starting from grub with previous kernel (3.2.0-54.82) solve the issue.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

tested the suggested mainline kernel. wireless is not unclaimed with this kernel (recognized with lshw) but wifi is not working properly, icon always flashing and requesting for the wpa passphrase but never connects. also bluetooth not available! to have wifi and bluetooth working i have to use again 3.2.0-54.82 kernel.

i got some error messages installing the mainline kernel headers, probably about wireless modules, so i'll attache file make.log

afaik the bug is not fixed in the mainline kernel

i tried the iso of latest development release of ubuntu, but it force me to do a recovery and reset all my partitions, swap and settings to factory default. so i cannot try completely, but i saw still no wifi nor bluetooth available in the ubuntu tray icons.

apport information sent with the working kernel 3.2.0-54.82

ps: the HP 650 notebook comes with pre-installed ubuntu with repository /main(hp.archive.canonical.com) wich contains packages like oem-wireless-rt2x00-1044172-dkms

If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

HP releasing only windows file .exe to update the BIOS, so is bit difficult now to upgrade as i have only ubuntu on this HP 650.
Btw you think this bug can be considered a duplicate of this? https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1049466/

new bios just fix some windows related problems, so maybe is just an issue with the wifi module version or dkms Dynamic Kernel Module Support?

the linked bug can have the final solution to make the wifi work with new kernels out of the box?

btw is an updated bios is always good, i'll try to upgrade and report as asked. thanks

As this machine has the RT3290 wifi dkms, this is not the same issue as bug 1049466.

This is caused by dkms build failure:

In file included from /var/lib/dkms/oem-wireless-rt2x00-1044172/20120910compatwirelessstella6/build/include/linux/compat-2.6.h:64:0,

include/linux/slab.h:243:21: note: previous definition of ‘kmalloc_array’ was here

kmalloc_array was only introduced in 3.2.0-55.85 by commit 33c8356c.

As a temporary fix, download the attachment compat-3.4.h, then run these commands:

sudo cp compat-3.4.h /var/lib/dkms/oem-wireless-rt2x00-1044172/20120910compatwirelessstella6/source/include/linux/
sudo dkms install oem-wireless-rt2x00-1044172/20120910compatwirelessstella6 -k 3.2.0-55-generic

thanks a lot for the temporary fix. after the workaround i have wifi and bluetooth working in 3.2.0-55 kernel too.

hoping for a complete fix to avoid dkms build failure in future kernel versions
