Bug Description

The wireless connection keeps getting reset and it has become difficult to Skype or to watch streaming video from certain sites(comdey central or Hulu).
This bug has existed for years, but I just havent gotten around to reporting it.

Around the time when the connection drops I see the following messages:

Network completely disconnects while skype calls and I have to restart the connection by using the rf kill switch. At that time I see these messages:

Vish, does forcing your router to use 802.11g only, and/or disabling 802.11n on your laptop provide a WORKAROUND?

I've tried doing it on my laptop as mentioned here > http://technosopher.wordpress.com/2012/02/17/wireless-slow-flaky-crashing-router-intel-6300-6205-5100-6300-chipse/
But I just get a "module not found" message.

And I don’t have access to the router to be able to change it.

Vish, just to clarify, as you are using iwl3945 as the WiFi kernel driver, you did:
sudo -s
cat "options iwl3945 11n_disable=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf
modprobe -rf iwl3945
modprobe -v iwl3945
exit

Yup, but when I did the cat, it kept giving me an error:
# cat "options iwl3945 11n_disable=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf
cat: options iwl3945 11n_disable=1: No such file or directory

So I just manually added the options line via gedit. (Attaching the conf file just for reference, maybe I did it wrong)

And all this is in the latest mainline kernel.
$ uname -a
Linux Vish-Aspire-5670 3.12.0-999-generic #201311080433 SMP Fri Nov 8 09:43:34 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

Vish, ok so disabling n doesn't provide a WORKAROUND.

Regarding mainline testing, it would be best not to test the daily folder, but the ones announced by Linus (ex. http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.12-trusty/ ). This is to avoid upstream confusion.

As well, could you please provide the missing information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LinuxWireless#Debugging_information_to_provide_in_your_bug_report ? It is understood you don't have access to the router to change it. However, as much information you can get from the router administrator will be most helpful.

hi Christopher,
I've tried following the wiki instructions for using ndiswrapper , from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper
 but I'm not sure if I'm loading the driver correctly. when i run
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
I dont seem to have the driver working. I'm not sure if the driver even loads. so I tried rebooting.

1)
With the latest driver from Acer website for my laptop, the system does not reboot into Ubuntu if the driver is loaded. i have to boot into a different kernel , remove the driver and only then can i boot ubuntu into that particular kernel.

2)
The wireless connection works without problems when I boot into windows xp. So i figured that this would be the best driver to use.
 I tried finding the driver from the windows Xp boot, but I was only able to find the .sys file and .dll, but could not find the .inf file in the windows partition.
any ideas as to where i could find the .inf file?

3)
Now the system does not load iwl3945 module every time i boot up the laptop.i manually have to run $ sudo modprobe iwl3945 each time. I tried commenting out the blacklist of the iwl3945 module & also removing the blacklist which i had to do during the ndiswrapper instructions, but that did not help.
How do I make sure that the iwl3945 module loads automatically?

2) Good to know it works in WinXP. Regarding .inf files, I just did a *.inf search (in Vista) and it would appear many are found in:
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository

3) It would appear you may have not fully uninstalled, and reversed the previous steps you took when you were attempting an ndiswrapper configuration.

Testing ndiswrapper is requested largely to see if one would have a conceivable WORKAROUND and check for hardware error. Given you can't (easily) get it to work, and you tested WinXP, that would be sufficient for that part of things (although you may want to file a bug report against ndiswrapper if you tested it with the WinXP driver and it didn't work).

Have there been any updates on this issue? This bug affects me as well (in fact, exactly as Vish posted), and I would like to know if there's a decent workaround.
I run a wireless driver on Windows 7 for my card, and it runs fine, so I know that it's not a hardware, but a driver failure.

So your hardware and problem may be tracked, could you please file a new report with Ubuntu by executing the following in a terminal while booted into the default Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline one) via:
ubuntu-bug linux
