Bug Description
We need to support the realtek bluetooth part that comes with the Realtek Wifi MiniPCI Card ( 8723BE )
the info collect has been done a Clevo W310CZ
Realtek has provided a driver which has been patched to work on trusty/3.13 here :
https:/
This driver replace the current btusb driver and thus might cause different dehaviour with other bluetooth cards.

Yes it has been tested on 3.18 and it's still not working
but I'm not surprised as the realtek support has not been pushed in mainline kernel and I doubt that Ubuntu kernel devs would patch that sort of thing.
What would be the right procedure then ? Push the fix to upstream ? We have everything ready on the github mentionned above.
For now I've created an alpha state DKMS from this github :
https:/
Which results in a dkms deb but which does not include the firmware.
http://
Also this DKMS overwrite the current btusb which quite dangerous ....
Does the ubuntu project distribute dkms drivers even when they are opensource ?
For now it's the right thing to do it seems.

Bluetooth driver for this chipset will be included in the 4.1 kernel, once released, maybe it can be backported to older versions as well? Otherwise no native support until Ubuntu 15.10.

I built a dkms module based on lwfinger. It it will install on new kernels.
Install it by
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hanipouspil
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rtl8723au-bt-dkms
Firmware is in separate package, but in will install by dependency too.

Please help to test this DKMS , the package is tested on 3.16 utopic kernel and I'll feedback to realtek that it's not working on the current Ubuntu and mainline kernel.
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #43 |
There firmware is needed too.
I added firmware form 1.144 form Ubuntu 15.10 to same ppa.
And install command will be
sudo apt-get install rtl8723au-bt-dkms linux-firmware
Michel-Ekimia (michel.ekimia) wrote : | #44 |
Thanks pilot6, I made a dkms with the version for 3.13 a long time ago and will try your dkms on 3.16/ubuntu .
@Tim : which source if it based on ?
Michel-Ekimia (michel.ekimia) wrote : | #45 |
@timchen119 I see that you 're dkms use the old rtk_btusb module, is that really what we want ? the point was to merge the rtk into the btusb .
Do you think we can deliver such kind of package to our clients ?

Michel-Ekimia (michel.ekimia) wrote : | #48 |
Thanks Pilot6 : one question, what will happened when mainline btusb will bump to 0.7 ?
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #49 |
Support of these bt devices is already included in bluetooth-next branch.
When they bump to 0.7, dkms will be not needed any more.
Firmware also is already in place. So it is a temporary solution.
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #50 |
Now I looked at bluetooth-next. They have 0.8 already there.
Well I can rebase it on 0.7 and set to 0.7.1.

Michel-Ekimia (michel.ekimia) wrote : | #53 |
@Pilot6 : Tested your DKMS on Ubuntu 14.04.2 3.16 , still nothing discovered. It seems we really need to dig what's wrong with 3.16.
I'm always surprised that realtek does not deliver DKMS for Ubuntu LTS directly, they would spare a lot of time !
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #54 |
Did you also install linux-firmware from my ppa. Firmware for bluetooth has been added to 1.144 that is in Ubuntu 15.10.
Without the firmware it will not work. I made a separate package for bt-firmware but it will conflict with nwe linux-firmware, that has same files.
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #55 |
So to install bt driver from my ppa run
sudo apt-get install rtl8723au-bt-dkms linux-firmware
Michel-Ekimia (michel.ekimia) wrote : | #56 |
Yes linux-firmware has been installed from your PPA.
But the log says that the board do not need the firmware to be uploaded in the board which is weird because in 3.13 the firmware was uploaded.
Did it work on your side on 14.04.2 ?
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #57 |
I do not have the hardware. Was there a warning about "sanity check"? I think the problem is in that same 0.7 btusb version in 3.16 and my module. Can you change it yourself to 0.7.1? I am out of my main computer now.
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #58 |
I updated my ppa for vivid. Changed module version. But I get feedbacks that it worked without that.

I have the RTL8723BE, and the firmware and DKMS from Pilot6's PPA seems to work. Alas it does not enable Bluetooth; I need to install Troy Tan's Bluetooth firmware from here: https:/
Jason Heeris (detly) wrote : | #64 |
Oh, apparently even that doesn't work. I had to go back and install rtlwifi_new from source again.
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #65 |
@Jason
To get it work you need to install both rtlwifi_new and BT driver from one place.
If you uninstall both drivers from github and install them from my ppa, they wll work.
sudo apt-get install rtlwifi-new-dkms rtl8723au-bt-dkms linux-firmware
You need to make sure that nothing is blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d
Jason Heeris (detly) wrote : | #66 |
@Pilot6
Unfortunately it's still not working. I uninstalled the github versions by reinstalling the kernel via Synaptic. I then installed the packages you specified (the 8723BE module is definitely built) and power cycled. Bluetooth devices cannot be found by Gnome's bluetooth settings.
Jason Heeris (detly) wrote : | #67 |
Well now I can't even get it to work with my previous method. This is annoying. I've purged or downgraded the packages you listed above — is there some other thing I have to do to get everything back to a clean slate?
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #68 |
My packages are cleanly removed. Not like github versions. They overwrite package files and blacklist modules. That's not good.
I can review blacklists manually and also module associations.
To get it clean is better to install a new kernel.
Jason Heeris (detly) wrote : | #69 |
Yes, I agree. I'd much prefer to be able to install a package instead of installing the drivers from github. However, if they don't work, they don't work. I can provide debugging logs if you tell me what would help, but apart from that, I'd rather have the functioning hardware.
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #70 |
I updated version to 0.7 in my ppa.
There are fixes for shared USB ids. You can try it after it builds.
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #71 |
Previously I made a stupid mistake in packaging with DKMS versions. Now I fixed it in 0.7.1.
It previously may not install correctly for same reason.
Ed-ekennedy (ed-ekennedy) wrote : | #72 |
I am also getting irregular behavior with my 10ec:b723 wlan.
Michel-Ekimia (michel.ekimia) wrote : | #73 |
Hi guys , just to say I gave up on this. We now replace all those realtek cards with Intel 7260 included in the kernel, rock solid.
Kaarel (krlk89) wrote : | #74 |
Drivers for RTL 8723BE chipset are included in Kernel 4.1+ but I am getting kernel panics when a bluetooth device is enabled and in use. At the moment running kernel 4.2 RC4, the problem is still present.
Might be a broader problem, found this thread: https:/
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #75 |
@Kaarel
They had been included long before. The question is which drivers.
The ones from my ppa work well with Ubuntu kernels 3.13-3.19.

Bluetooth works out-of-the-box with kernel 4.1+, with previous kernels I had to compile the necessary drivers (I used drivers from lwfinger github).
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #77 |
I know that in 4.1 the driver has been included in mainline kernel.
But 4.2 is not released and is not supported in Ubuntu.

Currently using Ubuntu 15.04, I have tried Ubuntu Mainline kernels 4.1 (RC-s and stable) through 4.2 RC5. Getting kernel panics at seemingly random intervals when a bluetooth device is enabled and in use.

It was a problem with some kernel versions. No more kernel pancis with 4.2 RC7.

Jason,
If you installed a driver from the git repository, you need to remove it.
Kernel 4.2 supports this adapter by itself.
You need to install firmware that has a file for this adapter
wget http://
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware _1.156_all.deb

Installing linux-firmware 1.149.3 got rid of the "Failed to load..." message, but bluetooth still fails to work. That is, when I try to connect devices that worked with Tan's firmware, it just times out. In this case, I see:
$ dmesg | grep -i blue

Same results with Pilot6's PPA (0x0408 tx timeout). Although I don't think his PPA was ever intended to work with the 4.x series kernel.
So — is there anything I can do to help with this?
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #85 |
You need to have both "rtlwifi-new" and "rtl8723au-bt" packages.

Sorry, crossed signals with Pilot6 above.

I presumed that reinstalling linux-firmware and installing a new kernel would do this. Is that correct?

I'll give the linked firmware package a try, thanks.

Yep, had both of them.
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #88 |
I am Pilot6 and you are correct. I never tested it with kernel 4.2.
You need to report a bug to the kernel bluetooth maintainers, since
they claim to support these devices.

I thought this was a bug report against the kernel. Or should I open a new one?
Jason Heeris (detly) wrote : | #90 |
Using linux-firmware _1.156_all.deb I get a slightly different outcome. Now when I run "dmesg | grep -i blue" after boot, there are no results. After I use Gnome's bluetooth settings window to try to connect to a device, the log contains:
$ dmesg | grep -i blue
[ 54.843287] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0405 tx timeout
[ 94.867230] Bluetooth: hci0 command 0x0408 tx timeout

This is a launchpad Ubuntu bug. But you need to write an upstream letter.

That documentation suggests I need to install a mainline kernel from http://

Pilot6 - is your PPA expected to work with the 3.19 kernel?
Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) wrote : | #94 |
Yes, It should work on 3.19.

It's timing out on my system. Are you interested in any debugging information? And if so, should I contact you off this bug report?

I have the same bug on a Lenovo B50-10 fresh ubuntu 15.10 install: wifi working, but bluetooth KO.
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
