Kernel reboots immediately after grub

Bug Description

The last correctly working kernel version was 4.8.0-30

There is no text or diagnostic information printed by the kernel prior to reboot.

All newer kernels will only boot with the nomodeset option (recovery mode), but then AMD graphics drivers don't load and video performance is poor.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.4 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I tested the latest mainline 4.4 kernel (4.4.56) as requested. It exhibits the same behavior. I also tried the 4.8.17 mainline kernel with the same results. I still have to fall back to kernel 4.8.0-30.

I have continued to research this issue. In the meantime, I have also upgraded to Ubuntu 17.10 and the issue persists with kernel 4.10.0-19.

My research eventually turned up this thread containing a workaround for the problem:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=221391

Kernel 4.10.0-19 will boot correctly with the radeon driver loaded and functioning by adding the following kernel parameter to grub:
radeon.dpm=0

Can you try these Linux versions:
4.8.6
4.8.7
4.8.8

4.8.6 should work fine.
Both 4.8.7 and 4.8.8 backported some radeon fixes.

Thank you. I tried 4.8.6 and it seems to work fine. Hopefully the radeon fixes will make their way into the Ubuntu 17.04 4.10 kernel soon. I think this bug can be closed.
