Bug Description

I have some problem in Ubuntu sound card since I upgraded the latest 4.4.0-128-generic or 4.4.0-127-generic version of the Ubuntu linux kernel.

while I start the computer, sound card is unable to work(there is nothing at sound setting output).

I try to restart alsa, but:

sudo alsa force-reload
[sudo] password for jay:
Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-hda-codec-generic snd-hda-intel snd-hda-codec snd-hda-core snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-seq-midi snd-seq-midi-event snd-rawmidi snd-seq snd-seq-device snd-timer (failed: modules still loaded: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-hda-codec-generic snd-hda-intel snd-hda-codec snd-hda-core snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-timer).
Loading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-hda-codec-generic snd-hda-intel snd-hda-codec snd-hda-core snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-seq-midi snd-seq-midi-event snd-rawmidi snd-seq snd-seq-device snd-timer.

So I try to reinstall the driver modules in Ubuntu like this:

sudo apt-get -y --reinstall install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils lightdm ubuntu-desktop linux-image-`uname -r` libasound2

And killall the process

sudo killall pulseaudio

The sound card began normal work now.

Also I founded a lot of error log in /var/log/kern.log like this:

Jun 16 14:47:57 home kernel: [ 3494.077340] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: AER: Corrected error received: id=00e0

This problem occurs every time I start the computer.

Does this issue go away if you boot back into the kernel prior to 4.4.0-127?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.17 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue.
Sound card works with 127 kernel and with 4.15.xx under Kubuntu 18.04 but fails to work under 128 kernel.
Moreover, it causes Plasma load about several minutes until error line in dmesg appear
hda_intel azx_get_response timeout switching to single cmd mode
this is my sound card
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Device 9d71 (rev 21)
At the end, after next reboot under 128 sound card disappears from lspci completely and do not appear even if I boot to any other kernel or even other OS.
I have to disable it and enable back in BIOS in order to appear back in lspci.

Hello

I would like to join to this issue, because I am also experiencing pulse sound problem since 4.4.0-128 kernel

4.4.0-128 + amd64-microcode:amd64 3.20180524.1 made my sound card disappeared at all
I revert to previous amd64-microcode 2.20160316.1 and 4.4.0-127 and got my sound card and sound back

Then I tried 4.4.0-130, 4.4.0-131 with amd64-microcode 2.20160316.1, the result is sound does exist, card does exist, but I can not change the volume via pavucontrol. It always the same level

I use Xubuntu 16.04
Lenovo Thinkpad T480
Intel processor i7

lspci:

00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Device 9d71 (rev 21)
 Subsystem: Lenovo Device 225d
        ...
 Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
 Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel

I do not have any problem only with 4.4.0-127 + amd64-microcode 2.20160316.1
And do not have any ideas why amd64-microcode affects on my intel system

Thank you

I am very sorry that the reply is late.

This is my first-time use launchpad to report bugs.

If I boot back into the kernel prior to 4.4.0-127 this issues still existed.

Even now, my sound card still not working good as it did before.

Hi,

I found the solution, at least, it works for me.

First of all I blocked amd64-microcode in modprobe.d with "install microcode /bin/true"

Second, I added "option snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1" into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Now I have sound card and sound and latest kernel 4.4.0-131-generic

Hope it will help

Tonight I reinstalled the system with the Ubuntu 18.04, and the sound card begins work as good as it did before.
So, if you couldn't fix it by yourself, just reinstall the system or upgrade to the ubuntu 18.04(except the guys which has been using the ubuntu 18.04).
