Bug Description

I have a Dell Latitude E7470 laptop with a docking station and two external monitors.

I made a system update yesterday (without restart), and I tried to work today.

When the laptop lid is laid off, all displays are black and stays that way. When it's open, it works fine. If I lock the computer, the displays are going black again.

Also, I cannot restart the system, it just hangs.

The only solution is to switch off the system is holding the power button, then booting up again, with the laptop screen open.

My other colleagues with similar configurations have the same issues.

The only recent changes to Ubuntu 18.04 I can see that might be relevant are:

gnome-shell - 7 January 2019
linux (kernel) - A couple of times this month

There have been no changes to Xorg or mutter anyway...

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

Is the main problem you are reporting that all displays turn black after you close the laptop lid?

Yes, the main issue is the displays turn black.
However, I think that both causes (closing the laptop lid and locking) are equally important.

I have similar problem, in my case I saw some firmware update but don't know what it was exactly.
It happens while Im using Dock station through thunderbolt and when I plug in directly to laptop through HDMI port. I have tried with noveau ( doesn't work at all ) and nvidia drivers ( works but can't change display order as it hangs and also closing lid makes my laptop freeze ). I tlooks like something happens with xorg server but not sure.
