It's hard to say because Kernel's 4.10-5.0 are not bootable due to USB
EJ168 EHCI & Intel SSD bugs on my config.

Come to think of it, try "Ubuntu on Wayland". It uses a slightly different rendering method, avoiding the atomic modesetting that Xorg uses. The error message looks like it might be related to that.

I don't want to spend CPU cycles and energy power on hosting xorg on
Wayland due to incompatibility reasons.
See my config - it's QX6800 on AGP &PCI - is it Wayland compatible?

"Xorg on Wayland" (Xwayland) isn't like virtualization. It's the same source code as Xorg. And the "Wayland" part is the same source code of gnome-shell you're already using.

I don't think you would find any problems with "CPU cycles and energy power". At least no more than it already uses.

Yes, I would expect your hardware to work with Wayland. Just try selecting "Ubuntu on Wayland" from the login screen.
