Bug Description

I have a Samsung N120 netbook, where the wifi refuses to work.
I'm running Karmic Koala 9.10, fully updated as of 090616.

lspci tells me the wireless chipset is:
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:8192] (rev 01)

I've tried installing linux-restricted-modules-generic and linux-backports-modules-karmic, but nm-applet still thinks I have no wireless card installed.

Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . Please let us know your results. Thanks.

I've tried with a Xubuntu 9.04 updated as of today and it did not work.

I upgraded to 9.10 and it's still not working there either with 2.6.31-1-generic

Not sure what information I need to provide here to help figure out the issue.

Can you follow the instructions given at the following address concerning "Wireless Networking - Atheros":

Yes, well... Since there is no Atheros chipset in this thing, there's not much luck trying to load those modules.

Does anyone know a replacement chip?
Really need to fix this. But have yet to find a chip the same size that is supported.

I use Ubuntu 9.04 (because it is the Netbook-Remix-version) I recommend not to install this version until next Netbook-Remix is released.

A brainiac fixed my stuff using this:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/Networking/NdiswrapperHowToforSuSE9
together with some drivers from the CD that came with the computer.
He found the winXP drivers for my realtek-card through the XML-file.

A littlebit buggy but I managed quite well.

Then I was stupid enough to update to 9.10 and decided to reinstall to 9.04 and of course it all disappeared. Back to LAN now. :-)

rtl8192e driver got into the kernel after 2.6.31, so it's not included in karmic. You can try some newer version of mainline builds to see if the wireless driver works. Check http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/.

There doesnt seem to be a rtl8192e module in the 2.6.32 kernel I grabbed from the link above. Do I need to build something myself somehow?

@Andreas Berger
I checked the mainline build deb. rtl8192e is in the staging tree but the staging tree is not built. You may have to build your own kernel with CONFIG_STAGING enabled to try the driver.

I've built a new package for karmic, containing the needed kernel module for the realtek 8192e wireless card.

It's called 'samsung-wireless' and it's available on my testing ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~voria/+archive/archive/

Some users have reported it's working good on Samsung N130/N140, it should work good on N120 too.
I would be very grateful to get feedbacks about the package in this thread on the 'Linux On My Samsung' forum:

Hi Andreas,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 387875

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I've updated the machine as of *now* and the issue still exists. I tried using kernel 2.6.34-020634rc1-generic #020634rc1 SMP Tue Mar 9 10:59:29 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux but that one doesnt seem to have a rtl8192 driver either.

Looking at realteks homepage I cant find a download for the chipset that supports kernel 2.6.32 and up either.

I'll reboot back to the current lucid kernel and run apport-collect as wanted.

It does work now... but I had to grab non-free firmware off kernel.org and manually add. It'd be nice if this got recognized automatically.

Andreas,
I'm glad you were able to get it working. I am informed that we usually recommend an upgrade to address such issues as we are reluctant to backport nonfree firmware too far in order to keep from introducing regressions. So this should not be an issue in the latest release with non free firmware package included.

Thanks!
