Hi Andrea,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 715267

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I'm getting this exact problem on two Vostro V13 laptops being tested for hardware certification.

I don't get any output on dmesg, but after resuming from suspend, touchpads are unresponsive.

A workaround is to rmmod psmouse and then modprobe psmouse. That brings them back to life.

This was tested under 11.10 with kernel 3.0.0-12.20.

I'll just set the bug back to incomplete, as I don't want to hijack it so violently, but please let me know if you want me to add apport information and/or test a mainline kernel.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.1-rc9 fixed and issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.1-rc9'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Joseph,

I tried this "daily" 3.1 kernel:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2011-10-21-oneiric/

and this release candidate kernel (3.1.0-rc10):
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.1-rc10-oneiric/

I see this problem appear under both kernels: after a suspend, pad is unresponsive and I need to rmmod psmouse; modprobe psmouse to reenable it.

I'll be attaching apport information as it seems I'm now the sole tester for this problem :) and to be complete, we're observing it also on a Studio XPS 1340. Looking at dmesg it appear to have the same Synaptics touchpad as the Vostro V13 (though I haven't looked at other Dells we have to determine if the same touchpad is working on *different* systems).

Er, Apport asked me to file a new bug instead, as I'm not the original reporter here. The bug with apport information is bug 879650. I'll set that as a duplicate of this one, as this has all the tags and triaging info, but feel free to rearrange the bugs as necessary.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

Hi Joseph,

I tried http://bugzilla.kernel.org but it's down (and has been ever since the kernel.org breach a few weeks ago I think).

I can file this bug, but it looks like I'll have to wait until the bug tracker is back up.

I'll update once it's done.

Thanks!

Yes, it appears that bugzilla.kernel.org is still unavailable. One alternative would be to report this directly to the subsystem maintainer or to the LKML.

Confirmed to still happen on Precise's 3.2.0-1.3 kernel from today's build. Version string follows:

Linux version 3.2.0-1-generic (buildd@zirconium) (gcc version 4.6.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.2-5ubuntu1) ) #3-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 22 11:17:48 UTC 2011

I've been waiting for bugzilla.kernel.org to come back but it's been down for months, so I'll start looking into reporting this through a mailing list instead.

Hi,

This bug has been reported directly to the linux-input subsystem's maintainer, who has requested some debugging information on this problem.

Daniel, was this working fine in Ubuntu 11.04?

@Ara,

I installed and tested 11.04 with kernel 2.6.38-8. It exhibits the same problem.
I then went all the way back to 10.04.3 with kernel 2.6.32. The problem is NOT present.
I didn't test 10.10 with kernel 2.6.35.

Also, the linux-input maintainer sent me a patch which I tested and which takes care of the problem. I reported back with my results and am awaiting a reply from them, so potentially this will be fixed upstream.

The patch has to be applied to the kernel source and recompiling the psmouse driver/module. If you want to have a look, it's attached to this email:

Hi,

A "final" patch that will apparently be submitted by the linux-input maintainer for inclusion in the stable/mainline kernel is here:

http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg18496.html

I tested this on the Vostro v13 and it solves the problem described here.

We have just rebased to upstream v3.2 final and uploaded, see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.2.0-8.14 . I'm therefore marking the Precise linux task as Fix Released based on comments 18, 19, and 20. The patch was CC'd to upstream stable which means it should end up in Oneiric through the normal stable maintenance SRU process without any additional action needed. Thanks.

Hi,

I just confirmed that installing the 3.0.0-16 kernel from updates on an Oneiric system (nothing except the kernel was upgraded) fixes this problem on the Vostro V13.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I tested this on the XPS 1340, and the 3.0.0-16 kernel from Oneiric updates also makes the touchpad reset properly when resuming.

Thanks!
