CD-ROM units doesn't mount automatically under a Live environment

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

I removed the needs-upstream-testing tag as I don't think installing custom kernels is possible to Live environment.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

David Balažic, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

It is the same. Inserted CD not mounted.

I tried the latest daily from the URL above on the same hardware.

The files manager app does not show any trace of the CD. If I moust it with " sudo mount /dev/sr2 /mnt" it all starts working, a new file manager windows appears with CD content, and an item of the CD under "Devices" in the left panel, even in the other file manager window, opened before.

After I try to eject the CD using the GUI, it is unmounted, but not ejected. (an error dialog pops-up)
After that it also can not be ejected bz the hardware eject button.

"eject /dev/sr2" also fails with:
eject: unable to eject, last error: Inappropriate ioctl for device

"Inappropriate ioctl for device" is also the error that appeared in the error dialog.

"sudo eject /dev/sr2" on the other hand works fine (ejects the CD without any error)

Priority set to 'Medium' since this bug is a problem with a non-essential hardware component.

Can anyone from the Kernel Team tell if this bug shall be fixed or left as it is, please?

Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Alberto Salvia Novella, the Ubuntu Kernel Team workflow changed a few years back to where they were no longer Assigned to bug reports. Instead, a specialist within the Ubuntu Community (many times a member of the Ubuntu Kernel Team) tends to assign it to themselves and work on it after it's fully Triaged.

Is it possible to install a new kernel into the Live environment?
That would require making a new ISO, right?
Are there an instructions for that?
Just replace the kernel image file in the ISO?

As far as I know, what Christopher is asking is to test the Kernel in an already installed Ubuntu environment.

What would that accomplish?

I just used the daily ISO build:

It has kernel 3.11.0-11.17

Now the second CD unit (sr1) is mounted when a CD is inserted (great!),
but the third CD unit (sr2) is not (not great!).

Mounting from command line with mount /dev/sr2 works.

Also, after mounting and unmounting, both units eject button is "dead". I does not eject. Even after removing the media (by software eject) and closing the tray (empty).

Ironically, the eject button on the first unit, where the boot media is present (and mounted!) works. It ejects the tray. While it is mounted.

Testing the kernel mainline built, following the instructions given in comments #23 and #27, is what is needed. Only then I will be able, as explained in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel, to report this bug to the kernel maintainers.

1.) Which ISO should I customize? ubuntu-13.04-desktop-i386 ?

Are there any detailed instructions to replacing the kernel?

but got a non-booting image. (it bootsm but later on it reports : mounting aufs on /root failed: No such device

Can I just replace the two files vmlinuz and initrd.lz?
If yes, where do I get the initrd file?
If no, what are correct steps?

I can imagine where the mistake is but I'm unable to tell for sure. So rather than telling what to do based in suppositions, I've asked for help from the Ubuntu BugSquad; and if after this what can you do remains unclear, I will investigate it myself till I can confirm the bug is still there.

OK, let me ask:

1) What makes people think it's a kernel bug? The kernel is detecting the CD drives in the bootdmesg, and if I read the bug correctly it mounts them if told to.
2) Does this issue happen in an installed system; i.e. if you install (I think you could probably install to a thumb drive if you wanted to be careful of your exisitng hard drive install) does it automount the CDs?
   2a) Because if it does happen on an installed system it's going to be a heck of a lot easier to debug
3) udevdb is showing all three sr0,sr1,sr2 and for the drives with media seems to have identified the filesystems.

1) Yes, I though that it was very improbable this bug to be from the kernel. Perhaps Christopher M. Penalver can clarify why he though it was.

2) The usb-creator-gtk application wasn't working in Ubuntu 13.04 the last time I tried to make a live thumb drive, so better to try to install the system in a USB media by booting a live-CD.

3) I suspect this bug to be Ubuntu specific, related to how the live-CD is automatically built and configured. But I'm unable to tell which will be the affected project.

- Impacts the ease of use.
- Is easy to fix.
- Would be encountered by the average user.
- Affects the default installation of the latest Ubuntu or Kubuntu desktop release.

For my surprise I have just been named coordinator of the "One Hundred Papercuts"; the project aimed to improve the user experience in Ubuntu by fixing small bugs in it, like this one.

Because of this, I'm so sorry I won't be able to test this bug myself like I wanted.

It prints nothing.
Tested on /dev/sr2 , running 13.10 live
