Bug Description

Binary package hint: mplayer

1) Karmic, 9.10
2) mplayer:
  Installerad: 2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu10
  Kandidat: 2:1.0~rc3+svn20090426-1ubuntu10
3) I played some music tracks through mplayer, and suspended the laptop. When resuming from suspend I expected audio to continue playing.
4) audio buffer looping continously. mplayer couldn't resume.

Output from mplayer:

AO: [alsa] 48000Hz 2ch s16le (2 bytes per sample)
Video: no video
Starting playback...
[AO_ALSA] Pcm in suspend mode, trying to resume.
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_hw.c:729:(snd_pcm_hw_resume) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_RESUME failed: Function not implemented

I suspect this is both a problem with mplayer not handling the error more gracefully, and a driver problem with my sound hardware. I have not encountered this problem before during a few years use of this laptop.

Hi, I have encounted exactly the same bug for more than one year (both on Ubuntu and Mardriva, on my Eee PC with HDA Intel). Should I do "apport-collect -p alsa-base" to this bug too? Or is there anything I can do to help here?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Robert

After installing pulseaudio and set it as preferred handler of audio in both KDE and SMPlayer, this bug seems to have been worked around, and suspending and resuming no longer crash MPlayer. So this bug may be Alsa-relevant.

Surely you mean the pulse alsa-plugin? Because, well, if it works fine
through PulseAudio, it *has* to work through ALSA, because PulseAudio
*uses* ALSA.

Or are you referring to the priority of sound "devices" as configured
for Phonon (or KDE System Settings > Multimedia)?

This bug was reported to mplayer upstream 4 years ago, still not fixed:
https://mplayerhq.hu/trac/mplayer/ticket/1617

mpv and mplayer2 have same problem:
https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/issues/324

But vlc-2.0.9 works fine.
