Bug Description
In Google chrome (and chromium from the archive) it's possible to add a desktop icon (like a webapp) via kebab menu -> more tools -> Add to desktop.
This adds a launcher on the desktop and to the menu. On other desktops (such as Unity) this works as expected.
On an up to date Ubuntu Artful the icon on the desktop launcher is missing. The icon in the launcher is fine however.

The desktop icons actually aren't part of gnome-shell. It's nautilus-desktop, which may also go away in future releases (!) It's also an X11-only app so depends on Xwayland (!)
