Unable to make any new installations, update/upgrades in Ubuntu 12.04

Bug Description

I get the following for any installation I try to make via the terminal

The hostname -f command returned: $1

Your system needs to have a fully qualified domain name (fqdn) in
order to install the var-qmail packages.

Installation aborted.
