While using mobile broadband connection, no icon is shown in Xubuntu

Bug Description

I have no idea if this is xfce panel releated. The applet appears to work OK but when a mobile broadband connection is established, there is no icon displayed in the xfce panel. All other functionality seems OK. If I disconnect there is again an icon.

Also sometimes after I disconnect I cannot reconnect again until I unplug and plug the broadband huawei USB device.

Did you change your theme? All the icons should be shipped with the default theme.

OK. I have upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 (and maybe from 11.04 before that) and I have changed my desktop a few times inbetween Unity -> KDE -> Unity -> Xface. I haven't done any magic. I have used sudo tasksel. The reason for that was because I had issues with all of these desktops, primarily with the netowrk manager.
The current setup Xubuntu 12.04 works best so far - hardwarewise. I usually do not like to play with my settings much and I usually do not install additional themes. So I think I am currently using one of the preinstalled ones: "Graybird". Even before I have done any changes - from the very first moment when I installed xface - there was no icon showing when Broadband connection is established.
I have read that this might be a theme releated, so I have played with varios settings after that but nothing changed.
The icon is OK when there is no connection, when there is a wireless connection or wired connection but there is just an empty space when there is a Broadband connection.

I could post a screenshot as a proof if that would help.

Confirming, I was able to reproduce the issue with a straight XFCE session, by removing the indicator widget from the panel and replacing it with a notification area.

In this case, only for the mobile broadband icon, somehow the icon doesn't show up (though the icon composited on top of it for some icon themes does work (for the HSPA/GSM/3G tags)).

It appears to me as though this is something going wrong either with the name of the icon (though the icon clearly exists, otherwise it wouldn't get displayed in Unity with the same name, etc.), and we'd get errors about missing files.

I'll look at the code now in case there is something funky that jumps out, but otherwise we'll need to reassign this down the stack to either GTK or the icon themes.

I have the same problem. I run xubuntu 12.04 upgraded from 10.04.

I found that the icon only where missing at my own (and only) account. But if I created a new account the icons showed corrrectly. Therefore I suspected that the problem was related to the user settings, but i don't know what file.

On the other hand, it also presented a workaround! I created another account with sudo rights (add user to sudo user group). From the new accout I moved all my documents and obvisly not affected settings from my home folder to a new place. (Ex /home/savedstuff). Then I deleted ever single file in my home folder.
Then I logged in as myself again, and xubuntu recreated al my settings to the default one, including the missing icon. Then I could copy all my files back to my home folder again. Dont forget to change back the ownership of the files, wich might have changed.

Can someone find wich file that stores the information i question?

In the same time, if one establishes vpn connection - network manager applet icon becomes visible
