Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager-openvpn

When using nm-openvpn to connect to a OpenVPN server which is configured to use comp-lzo compression and the client option is _not_ configured to use comp-lzo the connection appears to be working, but actually is not. The only indication of a problem is the following line in daemon.log:

nm-openvpn[4429]: WARNING: 'comp-lzo' is present in remote config but missing in local config, remote='comp-lzo'

Steps to reproduce:
1. Set-up OpenVPN server with comp-lzo enabled
2. Set-up Ubuntu client through network manager with comp-lzo disabled
3. Connect to VPN

Actual result:
Connection appears to be up, but is not working.

Expected result:
- Network manager shows pop-up with error
or
- Network manager prompt user to enable comp-lzo and reconnect

Confirmed. This is still current even with 0.8~a~git.20091209t012851.cbe313b-0ubuntu1~nmt1~karmic installed from the NM team trunk PPA.

Tried with SwissVPN test account, enabled LZO compression where remote doesn't enable it, VPN silently fails when traffic is sent through; works in the meantime with messages:

Dec 11 00:09:11 mtrudel-laptop nm-openvpn[4212]: Bad LZO decompression header byte: 42

This also applies to link-mtu:

Dec 11 00:09:42 mtrudel-laptop nm-openvpn[4212]: WARNING: 'link-mtu' is used inconsistently, local='link-mtu 1544', remote='link-mtu 1543'
Dec 11 00:09:42 mtrudel-laptop nm-openvpn[4212]: WARNING: 'comp-lzo' is present in local config but missing in remote config, local='comp-lzo'

There's a rather clear explanation of what needs to be done in the upstream bug report (GNOME); so marking as Triaged since someone in Ubuntu could decide to try to implement this before it makes it upstream (and hopefully send their patch upstream on the bug report as well).
