Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10
  Installed: 1:0.142.20
  Candidate: 1:0.142.20
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.142.20 0

Update manger asks for authentication when a user requests installation of updates. The dialogue box that opens fails to position the cursor in the input box of the form. This is an inconvenience, and other applications seem to have got this right. Perhaps a programming standard for the use of this authentication box object should be promulgated to all. This needs to be fixed both for consistency and good will purposes. It is lousy programming.

I get the same behaviour.

10.10 upgraded from 10.04

It isn't only with update-manager, but with most system-level things.

The authentication box opens, I enter my password, then it demands authentication again with no password dialogue. Closing the box allows the upgrade to proceed.

I am experiencing the exact same thing.

Authentication dialog appears, enter password, authentication dialog reappears with no field to enter password. Closing the dialog using its window controls allows the software to proceed, authenticated.

I just installed a clean 10.10 64bit amd version and I am experiencing a similar issue where the Authentication dialog box hangs there after I enter my password and never continues on.

Yes, the same problem on my laptop. The dialog asks for the password two times, but the second time don't shows the password input. If you close the dialog, then you have su access and all went well.

I also suffer from the hanging authentication dialog but also in places other than update manager.

I think the dialog is somehow launched by /usr/lib/policykit-1/polkit-agent-helper-1 as that process appears at the same time as the authentication dialog. After entering the password, the process disappears, but the dialog box is left open (I'm not sure which process actually owns the window). It is necessary to close the dialog box with the window manager (e.g. with the X button in the titlebar) to progress any further.

I guess the original problem that this bug described is in the policykit-1-gnome package. The other problem with the dialog box hanging around is covered by bug #445303.

Same problem here. However, it was working properly with a fresh install of 10.10 in November,, and then broke after getting updates sometime in January, 2011.

Reassigning to the policykit package as the authentication dialog is coming from that package.

Changed in update-manager:
status: New → Invalid
affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) → policykit-1-gnome (Ubuntu)
