Cannot sort static playlists

I see this was reported almost a year ago, and still seems to be affecting version 0.11.2. Is there anything I can do to help it along?

I can confirm this still exists in Hardy Alpha 5, with Rhythmbox 0.11.4, which I assume will be the final version in Hardy. The bugzilla bug seems active and there have been a recent patch or two proposed so that is promising at least. I will try to work with them to see what can come of it, and push to get this resolved for Hardy+1.

This is still a problem in 0.11.5. It is quite frustrating as I am trying very hard to get an alternative to iTunes, but there is nothing in the Linux world that does everything that iTunes does. Rhythmbox seems the closest but simple things like sorting and library file organising are sorely missing. Get those sorted and you have a Linux iTunes real alternative. Keep up the good work!!

The problem still exists in 0.11.6 as well. This bug has already been triaged and passed upstream, so no more confirmation of the issue is needed here. Extra info should be taken to the upstream bug. FYI, automatic playlists are able to be sorted; it's only static playlists that this issue applies to.

I would like to add that I access my music collection via a DAAP server, and playlists loaded over DAAP are also not sortable under 0.11.5.

it's a shame a thing like this one requires YEARS to be done; it's still present in rhythmbox 0.11.6 / ubuntu 8.10 intrepid ibex
ubuntu should, probably, select another default music player [because this one, rhythmobx, doesn't even have an equalizer, or simple playlist sorting, or...]; even mp3blaster it's a smarter choice [my 0.02$ ]

Thanks Sergey, I can confirm that your PPA fixes the issue! That is also a relatively simple fix compared to what I have seen proposed upstream. Have you put the patch on the upstream tracker to see if they are interested?

I'd like to perform a quick poll there: "Should the play queue be sortable in the such way?"

My thoughts:
First off it is a "queue" so it is doesn't intend it's elements can be reordered. My patch obeys this logic for now.

But, if I'd make the clickable headers for it, this feature doesn't obstruct users who do not use it. If you want to use it - you can.

So, the current solution looks like a dumb restriction for me. Please, help me to decide which way is the best.

I am indifferent Sergey. As it is a queue I think sorting it could be confusing, such as what happens to the currently playing song. If it moves to the middle, where will play resume? And would rhythmbox even behave gracefully in that case? Otherwise it is somewhat of an arbitrary restriction.

To me it's necessary, I usually add the music to the Play Queue from the Recently added list, where the albums ain't ordered according to the track number, so I just want to be able to reorganize the tracks in the play Queue. Adding this feature is pretty unobstrusive, so I can't see why should someone argue against.

I'd really like to see this bug fixed. Oftentimes if you drag songs into a playlist, it will end up getting out of order. (especially if you do a drag selection) If sorting were implemented, you could simply click the "track" column and be done with it, but instead you have to tediously drag each song into place. And since there's also a bug with dragging songs in long playlists (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/403389) it can get very difficult indeed... >_< This is a very basic functionality and should be implemented in any serious program that includes a list view. The fact that this has been an open bug for 2.5 years is very sad IMO.

hmm, looks like I just need to merge that package into Jaunty and re-upload it

I deal with a very large playlist at work (3000+). I like rearranging the order of upcoming songs, but the list's scroll position jumps when you start to drag.

Has this been changed to work with Jaunty? (I have not tried the above fix yet). I ditched using the program for a while because of this maddening bug. However, this seems to be the best Linux-based played, so please, please fix this. It's a deal-breaker bug to me.

This was supposedly fixed last January according to a post by "Fix.debdiff".
But the fix is not present in Karmic as of November 2009.
What happened?

This bug needs to be fixed upstream before it can be fixed in Ubuntu. Please add your comments to the upstream bug tracker.

This bug is really irritating, especially for large playlists.

This is a bug that need to be solved, sorting of large playlists is basic feature, this is the only thing avoiding rhythmbox to become the best player in linux.

This bug still in evidence in Maverick, Rhythmbox version 0.13.1.

I personally would rather see Rhythmbox development take precedence over Gnome Shell development; I won't be using Gnome Shell, but I would use Rhythmbox enhancements (e.g., offloading podcast functionality to a plugin, since I use Gpodder).

This should be high priority. Had to switch to Banshee. Need to sort in order to find songs quickly for study.

I finally gave up on Rhythmbox and I am sticking with Guayadeque. You can sort static playlists AND you can export/import radio station lists, and it doesn't crash on me like Banshee always has. I recommend the PPA version instead of the default repository version, as Guayadeque is *gasp* actively developed. And you don't have to add plugins to record streams or search the Shoutcast directory; it seems like these items were baked in from the start.

I've also tried Audacious, Clementine, Amarok and Exaile, but I keep coming back to Guayadeque for its combination of features and stability. I am done app-hopping now.

Rhythmbox is a dead end.
