Bug Description

Binary package hint: samba

OS: Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS
Kernel: 2.6.24-23-server x86_64
Samba: 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.9

We are having intermittent authentication issues with some windows clients connecting to our samba server. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it fails miserably and continually. I'm not sure how to reproduce the issue everytime but it does happen every single day. Looking for some help.

I wonder if AppArmor profile for samba is causing problems for you.

I doubt it's related, but you could try and temporarily disable the AppArmor cups profile to make sure.

Instructions for doing so are here:

We disabled the AppArmor profile, but there was no effect on this error.

We reviewed the domain controller logs when one of these authentication failures happened. There was not entry in the domain controller logs stating that the authentication was attempted. For all successful authentications, there is an entry in one of the domain controller logs.

We have complete wireshark traces for when a failure occurs. I can forward them along if required.

This issue does not happen on SLES 10 SP2. There is a workaround in place to use a SLES server to perform the Samba authentication, and have the SLES server NFS mount the Ubuntu server to access the data. This is a less than optimal configuration.

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote :

We performed a full Wireshark trace when the authentication failure happens.

It looks like all successful authentications send packets to the domain controller and perform an LDAP searchRequest. However, when the failures happen, we don't see any data being sent to the Windows domain controllers. Possibly a cache related issue?

@Joseph Salisbury, can you please attach the relevant logs in /var/log/samba/ after doing the following:

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote :

@ Surbhi, thanks for the feedback. I don't see debuglevel in the smb.conf file. Is the parameter "log level = N" the same option? In the previous logs we had this set to 5. I can see if we can increase it to 10. If "debuglevel" and "log level" are different, I can see if we can add that parameter.

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote :

@Surbhi, We have logs with the log level set to 5. Will setting the log level to 10 provide additional valuable data? We would like to prevent any changes, since this is a production environment, and changing the log level requires a maintenance window.

@Joseph Salisbury, yes please do attach the logs with the log level set to 10. It will give us more voluminous output.

@Surbhi, unfortunately increasing the log level to 10 caused a production outage. The high amount of logging overloaded the system and made it unresponsive.

Comparing the success and the failure logs attached by the bug reporter, I can see the following difference:

Success-log:
[2010/03/11 08:05:57, 3] libsmb/ntlmssp.c:ntlmssp_server_auth(739)
  Got user=[someuser] domain=[SOMEDOMAIN] workstation=[SERVER3] len1=24 len2=24

  check_ntlm_password: authentication for user [someuser] -> [someuser] -> [SOMEDOMAIN+someuser] succeeded
------------------
Failure-log:
[2010/01/27 19:02:21, 3] libsmb/ntlmssp.c:ntlmssp_server_auth(739)
  Got user=[] domain=[] workstation=[SERVER3] len1=1 len2=0

  check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [someuser] -> [someuser] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

The domain seems missing here?
------------------

Perhaps the wireshark trace will tell us better. Please attach the corresponding logs in case of failure _and_ success along with the wireshark output, so that tracing will be easier! Thanks!

@Surbhi,

I uploaded two additional wireshark traces. These traces are for the same two machines, but from an earlier date. The two wireshark traces show sucessful auths and failures for both users(service_bhavnacrysta and crystaluser).

I also uploaded the samba log for this time period. The log file name is: crystal3.log.

In the logs, the error happened at 13:45

Here is some analysis I did for the system crystal3. The wireshark filename is crystal3_2011-01-25_1345.pcap.
Note, A useful way to only see failures is to use this filter:
smb.cmd == 0x73

Wireshark analisys for file crystal3_2011-01-25_1345.pcap:
Failures for user crystaluser(Packet No.):
14504 with response in 14507
14516 wiht response in 14519

Successful auths for user crystaluser(Packet No.):
24 with response in 25
402 with resposne in 506

Failures for user service_bhavnacrysta(Packet No.):
14904 with response in 14905
14910 with response in 14911

Successful auth for user service_bhavnacrysta(Packet No.):
11974 with response in 11976

I noticed one thing when comparing the succuessful auths with the failed auths. Under the SMB Header, the User ID for the successful auth has (SCHDY\crystaluser) and also reports the Primary Domain and Account. For the failed auth this field only reports the User ID. There is also many more fields under the "Sessioni Setup AndX Respons section for the successful login. Maybe this is just a sign that the login was unsucessful? I created a screenshot comparing a failed auth(On the left) and a successful auth(On the right of the screenshot). The screen shot is named wireshark_auth_comp_screenshot.png.

Wireshark analisys for file fs1_2011-01-25_1345.pcap
Failures for user crystaluser(Packet No.):
10485 with response in 10488
10497 with response in 10500

Successful auths for user crystaluser(Packet No.):
8 with a response in 9
151 with a response in 153

Failures for user service_bhavnacrysta(Packet No.):
10875 with response in 10876
10881 with response in 10882

Successful auth for user service_bhavnacrysta(Packet No.):
8715 with a response in 8717

One other thing I noticed in the Samba log file. All successful authentications have this(Notice fetch_gid_from_cache):
[2011/01/24 10:23:46, 3] passdb/lookup_sid.c:fetch_gid_from_cache(1107)
  fetch gid from cache 10001 -> S-1-5-21-1870800502-1360593094-619646970-513
[2011/01/24 10:23:46, 3] auth/auth.c:check_ntlm_password(270)
  check_ntlm_password: winbind authentication for user [crystaluser] succeeded

All the failures are missing this line. Maybe this indicates something cache related?
