Can you paste a copy of the deb file it might be that there is an issue with the actual deb which is causing the crash.

Many thanks

It has stopped the crashing, but when I attempt to install a .deb file (like google-chrome-stable) I have to click Install, then make sure it starts the installation (which normally it doesn't start, so I have to press Install and wait three more times).

If the bug was in a chrome .deb then they have only just released a version that will install in Ubuntu 13.04. The last two versions didn't this is documented in the release notes.

Thanks for the added info I hope that will allow the devs to be able to diagnose the issue, although that particular package is installing without issue here so it may already be fixed.
