Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

After typing the user password in the authentication screen that appears when clicking on any "Install" button, that screen doesn't auto close and any other button that isn't from the window title bar doesn't work at this time. The screen must be manually closed by clicking on the window title close button, and then the installation of the selected software starts.

Hi, this is my first visit on Launchpad & I have this exact issue whenever I attempt to authenticate anything. Either hitting the enter button or clicking on the authenticate button will not work and both the cancel and authenticate buttons remain unresponsive ; The only way to download software is to close the window and doing that gets me through the process. Has there been a fix for the bug?

If I wait long enough after no response in trying to activate the buttons, the following message appears:

You are not allowed to modify the system configuration.

An error occurred while checking for authorizations: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
You may report this as a bug.

I haven't got this issue any longer. Can you give more details about which non-free kernel modules have you got, and which version of them?

Sorry, I'm new to Ubuntu. How can I find this out?

Are you talking about the graphics card? If so, it is integrated on an ECS RS482 motherboard using ATI Radeon Xpress 200G. I think I have the proprietary driver installed.

Use Synaptic Package Manager (/System/Administration) to find out your installed version of the package "fglrx".

It turns out I don't have "fglrx" installed. Instead, I have xserver-xorg-video-radeon (I'm guessing open source) & the version I have is 1:6.13.1-1ubuntu5 (Latest Version). What would happen if I installed fglrx instead?

As said in "https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver", Radeon Xpress 200G is well supported by xorg-video-radeon; and "1:6.13.1-1ubuntu5" is its latest version at this moment. I tried using them instead of fglrx and the bug still doesn't reproduce to me; but using an ATI Radeon HD5750, which has no hardware acceleration with xorg.

Ok, well thank you. I'll try using fglrx and see how that goes and if nothing changes, I'll just learn to live with it. You were very helpful..thanks..

And thanks to you at all, for taking your time helping to improve Ubuntu; but I figure you haven't to learn to live with nothing because here in Launchpad bugs are generally solved fast.

Hi,

In response to the fglrx packages; I dont have fglrx, instead I have the modalaises version (fglrx-modaliases).

I am experiencing the same issue as posted except on Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on my AMD machine with a Nvidia 6150SE nforce430 with the Nvidia current driver.
On a side note I am running Ubuntu through Wubi.

"fglrx-modaliases" is not a driver. Its description is:

<<In order to identify what hardware is supported by Jockey,
there must be a static list of what the current driver in the Ubuntu
archive supports. This package provides that list.>>

Can you have a look at "System/Administration/Additional Drivers" to see which proprietary drivers are available and also what are being used in your computers?

I've had this happen to me since 10.04, on most all the machines I've installed it on, and it still happens to me, randomly it seems, in 10.10. I'm currtently typing this on a Toshiba T235D laptop, Ubuntu 10.10 64bit desktop, installed using wubi, but also happens on my other machines that are not wubi installed, and they are using both Ubuntu 10.10 desktop 32 bit and 64 bit. This happens when I attempt to authenticate Anything, changing my proxy and it asks twice (when authenticating to proxy it sometimes won't close on the first window and sometimes it happens on the second), and installing software, or pretty much any authentication window, if I type "enter" or click "enter" it doesn't close. I have to click on the "x" to close the window, (and my "X" is in the top right, since I moved it back to the proper place after installing and using "ubuntu tweak")

I have just started having this same problem on 10.04. The problem began occurring after installing the ATI drivers with jockey. I have an AMD64. I updated the policy kit, but the problem persists. So far I have only seen it happen with software center. Other authentications appear to be working fine.
