Bug Description

In some situations, an app icon appears much too large either in a listing or on the app's screen.

Examples:

Search results and app screen
hotssh 0.2.6-2 and hotwire 0.721-2, software-center 5.1.14, Ubuntu 12.04 beta
hotwire 0.721-2, software-center 5.2.2.2, Ubuntu 12.04
1. Install hotwire
2. Restart software-center
3. Search for hotssh and observe the icon both in the search results and in the detail view
The icon in app-install-data, /usr/share/app-install/icons/hotwire-openssh.png, is a proper 64x64 PNG.
But the hotwire package installed adds another hotwire-openssh icon at /usr/share/icons/hicolor/24x24/apps/hotwire-openssh.png 192x192px (bug 969689)

The problem with the icon itself is reported in bug #969689.

Hi Dylan, and thanks for your bug report. Which Ubuntu version are you using? I have tried to reproduce this using the latest software-center in Precise and I do not see the results you describe. The icon in all cases is correctly sized, even after package install and restart of Software Center.

Thanks for any further info you can provide!

Hi again Dylan. Are you still seeing this issue with latest software-center 5.2 in precise? I still cannot reproduce (the icon for hotssh is correctly sized). Please let us know, and thanks again!

Gary, can you confirm that you installed hotwire? I wasn't particularly clear in my bug description. With that package installed, there will be a 192x192 image at /usr/share/icons/hicolor/24x24/apps/hotwire-openssh.png. I'm adding that image as an attachment.

That the image is too big is hotwire's error, but Software Centre should be a lot more careful here. It should enforce a maximum image size and actually scale images if they are above 24px. Right now something weird and crazy is happening.

Oh, by the way I am still able to reproduce this in Ubuntu 12.04 with software-center 5.2.2.2, app-install-data 0.12.04.4 and hotwire 0.721-2.

Hi Dylan, thanks! In fact, I had not installed hotwire itself yet. Once I installed it, I can verify this bug. My apologies for the long delay on this one!
