Bug Description

Steps to reproduce:

1) Open terminator
2) Espand a little bit and split vertically
3) Make first section active and click CTRL - to reduce font size

What should happen?
Font size should be reduced in first window

What happens actually?
The whole terminator window starts shrinking and gets unusable

Looks like a compiz or unity problem but reporting in terminator first. I attach a video.

Don't know if it's related, but recently (last week or so) I've had it re-size when I open it, nothing else. The first few times it went to a few pixels wide, maybe 10. More recently it seems to stop around 90px. For me it's width only, height remains the same.

If it makes a difference, I was trying out different desktop gui's, unity's so darned heavy... I tried: lubuntu-desktop, awesome & xfce4 (settled on xfce, but the bug occurs in unity too.)

I noticed it after dragging terminator from one monitor to another with high DPI. My suspicion is that the following is happening:

1. "Oh, I'm not an integer number of characters high/wide. Best reduce my screensize to reflect this"
2. [miscalculates correct drawing window, drawing it a little too small, potentially due to wrong frame size?]
3. GOTO 1.

Usually it'll resize automatically upon opening. Though ever since I unchecked "window geometry hints" it hasn't done it. I had just checked it again a little bit ago and it start shrinking again.

Can anybody of the affected users confirm if this is a Unity only problem, or if it also shows in other desktops like Gnome or KDE?

Sorry, comment #4 says it is also present in Lubuntu and Xubuntu. So when I have time I will try to report the bug upstream.

Hi, Terminator maintainer here. This is another occurrence of a common bug in Terminator. It's connected with the "window geometry hints" as suggested by #6. It seems like the geometry hints and the window manager get in an argument over how big the window should be, and they each start adjusting the size, causing the incredible shrinking windows. There's a number of bugs previously raised against the Terminator project in Launchpad (i.e. lp:1246078 and lp:1361252)

Simplest fix is to deactivate the geometry hints. I didn't write this bit of the code, and I've not yet figured out the proper fix.

I started having this problem today, on Ubuntu 14.04. I reproduced this problem by selecting a profile with a smaller font size in the first split window.

Disabling 'Window geometry hints' worked for me. For people like me who are unsure how to disable it:

Right click in Terminator and select Preferences
Under the Global tab, the third option is "Window geometry hints".
Unselect the checkbox and click close.

I confirm that disabling "Window geometry hints" solves the issue for Ubuntu 1604.

still seems to be an issue, but on other distros as well. likely an upstream issue with terminator. disabling window geometry hints has prevented self-resizing in xfce under centos 7.
