Bug Description

the "getting started with GNOME" "introduction to GNOME" and "start applications" sections of the desktop guide refer to how those things are done in vanilla GNOME and not the Ubuntu customized session. the instructions work, but they don't accurately demonstrate how the Ubuntu session looks or how most people would use it.

That's unfortunately true, most of the guide reflects vanilla GNOME. The simple reason is a lack of manpower; we'd need more contributors for the desktop guide.

But you make indeed a valid point.

You'd get involved in the docs team to start with. :)

Since the upstream docs make up the base of the Ubuntu Desktop Guide, it's not trivial. If you are interested in helping out, I would suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-doc mailing list and ask the same question there:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-doc

Then I'll try to explain the available possibilities.
