Bug Description

Per MPT design <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareUpdates?action=diff&rev2=178&rev1=177> Any manual download or installation should inhibit suspend, whether it is a system update or an app update. Any automatic download should not.

there is an api now to let the screen on, we should maybe use that?

On a slow connection, an update might take hours. So I think keeping the screen on during a manual update would be a bad idea for two reasons.

Firstly, leaving the screen on for hours would drain battery unnecessarily.

Secondly, the device doesn’t lock until the screen turns off or sometime afterward. So if downloading an update stopped the screen turning off, it would also stop the screen from locking. That would mean you couldn’t safely leave the device unattended while it was updating. You would have to carry it around with you. And that, in turn, means that if it was downloading over Wi-Fi, you personally would have to stay in range of the Wi-Fi.

If this bug is about interrupted downloads/installation, then one solution might be to move tracking of UDM in System Settings closer to the browser's. The implementations currently differ.

UDM/S-I will inhibit suspend. If you later go back to the updates panel, all download/install progresses should be restored. There used to be a bug in UDM that prevented us from restoring downloads, but this has now been fixed (see bug 1607382). I think that bug was the cause of this bug, so marking as fix committed.
