Bug Description

Hello,

Running Ubuntu 15.10 x64. Installed the day of writing this.

When firefox/thunderbird was initially installed, the icons were crisp and clean, but at some point throughout the day, not sure if after a restart or not, the icons for firefox/thunderbird became blurry when viewed in the unity launcher, and in the alt+tab interface.

Changing the scale of the unity launcher icons did not appear to have an effect.

Both are the latest versions installed via apt-get.

I notice when I search for files with "firefox" or "thunderbird" in them in /usr/share/icons, I only get results for firefox in the high constrast them. If I search for an application I know has working icons, like terminator, I get lots of results.

How can this be fixed?

Thank you for your bug report. Could you take a screenshot of the issue? Do you get the same bug in a guest session?

As you can see from the screenshot, the icons in both the unity launcher and the alt+tab interface are blurry/low quality.

The issue does not persist in a guest session.

Anything I can try in the mean time for a repair?

Update:

I have also tried installing 15.04 64 bit again, and this problem persists. The icons were fine for the first little while, and then they became blurry. I don't know for sure, but I want to say it's after a software update was run.

Update:

Evince is now affected by the same problem.

A note:

It seems that thunderbird and firefox seem to have a single pixmap icon file, rather than a series of images of different sizes that are placed in /usr/share/icons.

Is this a hint as to the nature of the issue?

Update:

Evince no longer seems to be affected. Firefox and Thunderbird still affected though.

Solved in my case -> Firetray addon for thunderbird caused the blurry icon. https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/thunderbird/addon/firetray/

After loading thunderbird with firetray addon both firefox & thunderbird icons went blurry. After closing thunderbird they went normal. Disabling the addon fixed my issue.

Thanks ockels!

Disabling FireTray addon solved this issue. It was a little bit different for me: only the Firefox icon become blurred after opening Thunderbird.
But I think I'll keep this addon enabled since it doesn't affect usability and features of these Mozilla products.
It should be forwarded to FireTray developers to be fixed.
Thanks again :)

Same problem here.

To be more precise, the problem occurs when and only when the Thunderbird-indicator in the panel is visible!
(in my case it's Thunderbird because I too only use the addon in Thunderbird)

Fix would be greatly appreciated

A workround is:
- go to folder .thunderbird/YOURTHUNDERBIRDPROFILE.default/extensions/{YOUR_UUID_FIRETRAY_PROFILE}/chrome/skin/icons/linux/hicolor/22x22/apps
- delete the png images of installed mozilla products
- restart Thunderbird

Verified on ubuntu 16.04 LTS + Thunderbird 52.1.1 (64 bit) + FireTray 0.6.1 .
