Launcher - unpinned apps show with empty pips in the launcher as if they exist on another workspace

unity 5.4.0+bzr1997ub
bamf 0.2.110-0ubuntu1
1. start an app that is not pinned to the launcher
2. notice its icon in the launcher as if its not in the current workspace i.e. the '>'
3. now alt-tab and see the app is not shown in the switcher

confirmed, and this seems like a recent regression in precise.
flipping to a different workspace and then back will make the app get filled-in arrows on the launcher, and it will appear in the alt-tab switcher.
