Bug Description
Binary package hint: xdiagnose
For cases where a system is booting into a blank screen, provide some method for the user to deliberately boot the system into the failsafe-x mode with xdiagnose launched.
This will permit the user to make alterations to their graphics configuration or select fallback drivers, to help them get booted.

Thanks I'll follow this here. a lot of what is going back and forth on these posts is above my head. I have tried a few boot options, like putting "i.915 modeset=1 and ...modeset=0 and "nomodeset". with varying poor results. I have also tried a few different ppa'a and trying to force vesa driver. I have not been able to get a regular gui on this box with any distro above 8.10. the box does fine with the failsafeX driver in "recovery" mode. I don't always get an option to boot into recovery, though.
