Option 1 - tweak indicators' xdg autostart .desktop files that should be autostarted by default under xubuntu
Option 2 - switch xubuntu to use systemd user session and launch indicators as managed by systemd
Option 3 - reinstate the upstart patch, but tweak it to do "systemctl --user start indicator-*.service" essentially

I'm not sure about option 2, as to how to do it properly.
E.g. should systemd user graphical.target be started in X11 scripts, or it should be spawned from the Exec= line of the .desktop file, or if startxfce4 / xfce4-session should kick that off.
