Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Just upgraded from Dapper to Edgy, my machine is an amd64 with dual monitors (using nvidias twinview). I have replaced the default metacity window manager with openbox.

The trouble is, when I cick on a menu (eg File), or right click for a context menu, the menu always pops up all the way to the right side of my desktop.

I just did a bit more testing and discovered the following:
When I start OpenOffice with openbox as my window manager I experience the problem.
When I start OpenOffice with Metacity as my window manager, or switch to metacity while openoffice is running, the menus behave as they should.
If I then switch back to openbox, the menus continue to behave as they should.

I confirm the bug.
Kubuntu 6.10 amd64, NVidia, TwinView on:
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "RightOf"

Menu (main application menu, context menu) is OK in e.g. KWord, AbiWord, but it is not properly shown in OpenOffice writer. It is always shown on right side of the mouse pointer, does not check current desktop border.

ok, just checked with feisty beta and OOo 2.2.

With Beryl as my window manager - no bug.
If I start OOo with Openbox as my window manager - bug occurs, menu is far right of rightmost screen.
If I start OOo w/ Beryl, but switch to Openbbox - no bug, unless I move the window from one monitor to the other, then the bug occurs.

Does this problem still happen for you on Ubuntu hardy openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3? I can't reproduce this problem on my machine.

I am also experiencing this problem on ArchLinux using Fluxbox 1.0 (which is very similar to Openbox) and Openoffice 2.4. It's very annoying and interferes with productivity. I hope that someone with the skill to fix this takes a look soon! I've scoured the web for a solution, and this is the only thread I could find describing the problem I am having.

You may comment the following lines

if [ -z $SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN ]; then
export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk
fi

in the beginning of /opt/openoffice.org2.4/program/soffice.
In fluxbox, menus go back to the right place.

Apparently this bug is 64bit specific and then only on certain window managers. Disabling SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk apparently also makes it so that you can no longer open documents either according to the other thread.

I have just verified that the problem still occurs on my machine running hardy. (I didn't try the fix above as I am no longer using openbox as my window manager, so this only verifies that it is not yet fixed in the standard packages).

And yes, I am also running 64 bit (don't know how I failed to mention that before, sorry).

Bjorn,

On Hardy what window manager are you using where you experience this problem?

Thanks,

Chris

I should have been more clear: I checked and verified that the bug still occurs when I switch to openbox and test it. Normally I use Compiz these days and there is no problem.

Since Arch apparently claimed it was fixed in 2.4.1 can you try hardy with current updates to see if 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2 works for you?

Thanks,

Chris

Sorry it took me so long to get a chance to test this - I just did an 'openbox --replace' to switch to openbox as my window manager and the bug still repros for me on Hardy with the latest updates.
