Bug Description

I have an Logitech MX518 mouse and the thumb buttons do not work at all. I did manage to get it all working on Breezy but I have done a fresh install and can't remember how...

But it is possible to get them all working in Linux and I don't think the user should have to go through the hassle I once did to achieve this. It should just work out of the box.

I had to install a package that converts the mouse keys to keyboard events (I forgot its name sorry) and then make changes to my xorg.conf file. I guess this package should be installed by default because these multibutton mice are becoming very common now.

Ok I worked out what is needed. It must be possible to make this process easy for users though - my mum could never do this!

The program imwheel and needs to be installed. Then the following needs to be in ~/.imwheelrc:

".*"
None, Thumb1, Alt_L|Left
None, Thumb2, Alt_L|Right

It's close to impossible to make work out of the box.. This should be done upstream, and input-hotplug could be the answer.

Changed in xorg:
importance: Medium → Wishlist
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

The thumb-buttons (for forward/backward) don't work on my Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer mouse either. Connected by USB.
