X11: Intel 855GM - Failed to submit batchbuffer: Input/output error

Xorg / i915 driver

After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.4 the X server crashes when I run any video using application: totem, mplayer, skype/webcam, etc.
The chipset is Intel 855M used in a Toshiba Satellite laptop that I use for testing.
Note: the same configuration worked fine on Ubuntu 9 (and continues to work fine in my 'production' laptop).

I find bugs on the Redhat and Debian forums with the same error message but they are triggered by different circumstances. I am therefore registering this here.
