My system with the same problem has "CN700/P4M800 Pro/P4M800 CE/VN800 Graphics [S3 UniChrome Pro]" as the onboard display adaptor on an Asrock 775VM800 motherboard.

Worked fine in 12.04 but after upgrade to 12.10 I get a brief flash of the splash screen followed by no video and no keyboard. Remote login via ssh works OK.

For me, the workaround to #1165232 as shown below seems to resolve the problem:

Alternative solution: Install this package from PPA mediahacks:
https://launchpad.net/~dtl131/+archive/mediahacks/+files/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome_0.3.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

Or, as an alternative workaround, holding the package at version 1:0.2.904+svn1050-1 while running Xubuntu 12.04 means one can then upgrade to 12.10 and upgrade again to 13.04 without problems.
