Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.11 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

This worked fine for me from a live 17.04 usb, but not on a system upgraded from 16.10. (Because of this, it seems unlikely that using an upstream kernel will make any difference.

I have just upgraded from 16.10 to 17.04 and 3- and 4-finger taps stopped working. Two finger tap and scrolling works as previously. I’m on ASUS Zenbook.

I have tested the upstream kernel as suggested in #17 with no success — the problem exists with this kernel as well.

I have also loaded the pre-upgrade 4.8 kernel, with which multitouch used to work on 16.10, but no success there either.

My experience is different than #18: I don’t get 4-finger tap working even on a live usb 17.04.

I have the same problem with a Dell XPS. On 16.04 was ok, and initially on 17.04 after a upgrade also was right (sometimes failed after suspend). But after an update, 3 and 4-finger gestures stopped working definitely.
