Bug Description

I'm unable to enter my password on the screen to unlock the disk during boot using kernels 4.10.0-35 and 4.10.0-37. Using the 4.9.45-040945 mainline kernel seems to work fine.

It's a bit of a problem since this is blocking me from upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10.

This issue is also preventing me from using paid snap applications (Hiri for access to email for work) so it is rather urgent. Any other information I can provide for this?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.14 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I see you posted you are using 4.9.45 in the bug description. Does v4.14-rc6 also work? It would be good to know to narrow down if we can bisect this issue and/or if its Ubuntu specific.

Ah, I see. Yes, v4.14-rc6 allows me to enter the disk password, however wifi does not work: Ubuntu thinks the laptop has no wifi capability.

Can you test the 4.10.0-38 kernel in Zesty -proposed:
https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-team/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/13563574

If it has the bug, please test Artful:
https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-security-team/+archive/ubuntu/ppa2/+build/13567624

To test these two kernels, install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

You shouldn't need the headers .deb files. Can you try just installing linux-image and linux-image-extra?

It either worked then or I booted the wrong kernel. 4.10.0-38 and today's 4.10.0-39 are not working, so I am back to using in 4.9.45-040945 order to be able to access the machine.
