Bug Description

Distro:
ubuntu budgie 18.04

Computer: Dell Inspiron 15 Core i7 4510U 16GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD R7 M265 2GB

Issue description:
Every time when i play a video or i play game on the system (Steam), the screen freezes..
However if i move the mouse the issue is gone temporarily, and the video continues (or game).

This is very inconvenient to keep moving the mouse while watching a movie.

I've also installed the restricted extras (ubuntu-restricted-extras) but this is not affecting the issue in a positive direction.

Mainly i use Intel built in GPU as i have issues with AMD.

I also reinstalled the system, it turns out that ubuntu 18.04 and other variants have no issues at all, only ubuntu budgie seems affected.

Is the Window previews applet added to your panel or not?

If it is what happens if you remove it from your panel, logout and login?

@fossfreedom Window previews applet is not added to panel. I also had the same issue with a fresh install of ubuntu-budgie. Let me know if any terminal output needed.

Is this browser specific? I.e. does it occur in chromium/chrome but is ok
in Firefox?

I mainly use Firefox, but i didn't encounter issues in the browser. I
cannot say anything about
chrome/chromium (yet),but i will test it

My issues are actually in VLC (snap), SMPlayer/GNOME MPV and playing
fullscreen games like freedoom

It affects Google Chrome from Google's repository as well.

Other reports confirmed Firefox works fine.

I'm sure you have read recent reports (see omgubuntu) - Google are not (currently?) supporting accelerated graphics using the capabilities of graphics cards. Hence why Google Chrome and Chromium before poorly on certain PC's.

It affects me too on both of my laptops: one with intel hd graphics 5500 (i5 5300u) and the other with intel hd graphics 4400 (i5 4300u).

It even affects me via live usb without touching anything.

Please fix this bug this is very serious, i love ubuntu budgie, i think it is the best distro in the world and this bug it's the only thing that prevents me from using it.

I also tryed many other ubuntu 18.04 flavours on the same laptops and none of them presented this issue.

If you use chrome or chromium turn off acceleration in the about config options or use firefox.

This isn't a specific UB issue. It affects different distros in different ways and is likely to be due to the linux acceleration lack of support by Google devs.

I found a fix without any throwbacks!

It's sufficient to start chromium with the flag --disable-gpu-vsync and the problem completely goes away.

It's possible to make chromium start with this flag by default, just execute this command in the terminal, restart chrome and the issue will be gone forever:

sudo sh -c 'echo "CHROMIUM_FLAGS=--disable-gpu-vsync" > /etc/chromium-browser/customizations/10-gpufix'
